Markha Valley Trek
The Himalayan region is a paradise and offers many wonderful trekking experiences for those seeking adventure in the mountains and peaks. The Markha Valley trek is definitely one of the most picturesque and famous treks in Hemis National Park. The Hemis Park is home to a viable breeding population of around 200 snow leopards, particularly in the Rumbak Valley. This trek will take you to high passes over 4575m in altitude and will traverse beautiful villages nestled in the deep valley surrounded by imposing mountains. You will admire numerous monasteries, remnants of an ancient Buddhist tradition. The trek through the high passes of Stok La, Ganda La, and Kongmaru La offers spectacular views of the Himalayan peaks. You will then descend towards the famous Hemis monastery where the trek concludes. During this trek, you will stay with local families, giving you the opportunity to discover the daily life of the villagers and their unique Buddhist culture.

Day 12: Leh - Delhi and Departure
Detailed programme
Day 1: - Arrival in Delhi
Arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi (usually in the evening). Collection of our luggage. Meeting with your driver and transfer to your hotel. Check-in at the hotel.
Day 2: - Delhi - Leh - in flight
In the morning, take the domestic flight to Leh. Another driver will greet you at Leh airport and take you to your hotel. Then, for the rest of the day, you will acclimatise after the low altitude of Delhi to over 3500 m. (Possibility to stroll around the markets of Leh)
Day 3: - Visit to Leh and surrounding areas
After breakfast, you visit the common capital Leh and its palace, built in the 17th century in the same style and roughly at the same time as the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Then visit the Shey Palace, where there is a large statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni plated in gold. Return to Leh and overnight at the hotel.
Day 4: - Trek - Leh - Chiling by car and Chiling to Skiu (3366 m) 3 hours of trekking
In the morning, you take the road to Chiling with a Jeep driver and there you meet the Trek team. Start the Trek by following the Zanskar River. Then, enter the Hemis National Park. After that, hike to the village of Skiu. Overnight with a local family (Homestay or camp).
Day 5: - Trek - Skiu - Markha Valley (3760 m) 6-7h of Trek
The next day you will join the Markha Valley. Markha is a lovely village with about twenty households. There is an opportunity to visit the ancient monastery and the ruined fort that are located above the village.
Day 6: - Trel - Markha Valley - Hunkar (4030 m) 4-5h of trekking
After the Markha Valley, you continue the trek to Hankar. You will find a change in the landscape and the altitude increasing. You will cross the river several times on foot. Overnight with a local family in Hunkar, the highest village in the valley.
Day 7: - Trek - Hunkar - Namaling (4841 m) 3-4 hours of trekking
After breakfast, the trek resumes, and the path from the village of Hankar leads you to Nimaling, where the villagers bring their livestock for grazing during the summer. There is also the possibility of walking to the base of the Kang Yatse glacier in a few hours from Nimaling.
Day 8: - Trek - Namaling - Kongmaru La (5260m) - Shang Sumdo (3680m) 7-8 hours of trekking
Today, after your breakfast, ascend to Kongmaru La and enjoy the spectacular views of Kang Yatse and the Karakoram (K2) from the pass. The descent is steep and long towards the gorges of Shang. You will need to cross the river several times before reaching the village. Overnight with a local family.
Day 9: - Trek - Shang Sumdo - Hemis (3678m) 4 hours of trekking and return to Leh by car
Last day of the trek. You are walking towards Hemis, one of the most well-known monasteries in Ladakh.
Day 10: Leh - Pangong Tso Lake - by car
In the morning after breakfast, you take the road to Pangong Tso Lake (5450m), the largest brackish water lake in Asia, where you will witness an absolutely incredible and captivating spectacle that will surprise you. One third of the lake is in India while the other two thirds are in Tibet. The crystal-clear water of the lake, the sandy desert mountains in the background, the herons swimming around, and above all, its "absolute virginity from human alteration" give it an atmosphere of total serenity. Night in the camp.
Day 11: Pangong Tso Lake - Leh - by car
At sunrise, stroll along the shore of the lake. The gentle reflection of the mountains and the sparkle of sunlight on the water of the lake create memorable images. Then have breakfast and return to Leh with your driver. Overnight in Leh.
